As Seen In Here at Moon Ocean, we spent many years recruiting a team made up of some of the finest jewellers in the UK to help clients design engagement rings that are the stuff of dreams More details under our Terms of Conditions. If online one-of-a-kind rings are what you need that will be something unique or special to you and your future bride our team is always around to facilitate that, even when it comes to more modern engagement rings.

Ordering a bespoke engagement ring

The process of choosing a diamond ring depends largely on the personal style of the wearer, combined with his or her personality and lifestyle. Some ring styles are more suitable for being active or working with your hands, and others are more intricate with stones set high. Think about how often the jewellery is likely to be cleaned and cared for reasonably, as some costly rings require more maintenance than others.

Choosing the metal of engagement ring

The karat system is used to classify the purity of gold. The karat system determines the proportion of pure gold in a piece of gold jewellery. The higher the purity level, the more pure gold there is in a gold ring or other jewellery item.

Pure gold is 24 karat, which means it contains gold in 24 of its 24 parts. Although the terminology sounds similar, the karat (k) system for measuring gold purity differs from the carat (c) unit of mass used to weigh diamonds. Gold used in engagement rings and other types of jewellery is typically categorised as 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, or 24k. This designation is based on the percentage of pure gold to other alloys present in the gold. When comparing golds for engagement rings, it's important to note that they all have varying purity ratings.

For example, 24 karat gold is pure gold, but the purity of 10k gold is only 41.7%. Most gold jewellery and engagement rings are made from 14-karat gold, which is 58.3% pure. One variety of gold is not always superior to another, and plenty of pros and cons are associated with each purity tier. At Moon Ocean, we believe that the best option for our diamond engagement rings and jewellery is 18k gold. 18 karat gold has 75% gold and 25% alloy. Its rich yellow look makes it an appealing material for engagement rings and other beautiful jewellery. In addition, because 18K gold is nearly pure, there is little chance that jewellery created from it would cause skin problems if you have a nickel allergy.

When it comes to engagement ring settings, there are four choices: white gold, rose gold, yellow gold, and platinum. While they are similar, their primary differences are in colour and composition. The type of metal for your engagement ring should be chosen based on personal liking, while composition or pricing may play a little effect.

Diamond Engagement Rings
White Gold Engagement Rings

White gold

White gold engagement rings combine pure gold and white metals such as nickel, silver, and palladium, generally with a rhodium coating. White gold is real, although it is not entirely composed of gold. The other metals reinforce the gold and boost its durability, which is especially important when it is an exquisite engagement ring. White gold has the advantage of being less expensive than platinum. It is now more popular than yellow gold and alloyed with harder metals making it more durable and scratch-resistant. White gold engagement rings match white diamonds better than yellow gold in some circumstances. It also complements light or rosy skin tones.

Yellow Gold Engagement Rings

Yellow gold

Engagement rings made of yellow gold are the least allergenic of the three gold hues since it is formed of pure gold combined with alloy metals such as copper and zinc. Yellow gold has historically been the most common metal used for wedding and engagement rings, making it ideal for vintage-style settings. At the same time, it is the purest gold colour and the simplest to maintain of the three gold colour varieties. In addition, yellow gold engagement rings enhance olive and darker complexion tones and are easily paired with lesser colour-grade diamonds.

Rose Gold Engagement Rings

Rose gold

Rose gold engagement rings are created by combining pure gold with copper and silver alloys. The copper and silver contribute to its strength and give it its rose hue. The more copper that is utilised, the rosier the gold appears. Rose gold refers to the entire family of red, rose, and pink gold colours. It is popular for men's and women's engagement rings and is regarded as the most romantic metal owing to its beautiful pinkish tone. Because of the strength of copper, rose gold is far more durable than yellow or white gold. Furthermore, such engagement rings unexpectedly match all skin tones.

Platinum Engagement Rings

Platinum

Platinum, a naturally white metal, is often used in jewellery and engagement rings in a virtually pure condition ranging from 95-98% purity. Platinum seems almost comparable to white gold and will retain its appearance for many years if adequately kept and cared for. Platinum engagement rings are stronger, heavier, and absolutely hypoallergenic compared to white gold. It is rare and more valuable than gold and is frequently used as a status symbol. But is platinum superior to gold? No. Platinum engagement rings are visually comparable to white gold and look best on light and rosy skin tones.

Choosing the engagement ring style

Solitaire

A diamond solitaire is any piece of jewellery that only contains one diamond, with no other diamonds on the sides of the centre stone or the ring's shank. A solitaire setting is the most traditional and classic ring setting. Most solitaire engagement ring settings have four or six prongs. A prong is a little metal claw that securely grabs the diamond and holds it in place. Four prongs allows you to view more of the diamond, while the six is more secure. This type of setting elevates the diamond, making it more visible and noticeable, allowing an immense amount of light to travel through it, boosting brightness and fire.

Halo

An engagement ring setting is called a halo when it has a centrepiece stone encircled by a full circle of additional, smaller stones. Diamonds arranged in concentric circles or squares around the main stone of a halo ring give the appearance that the centre stone is larger and more brilliant than it actually is. A double halo setting, as the name suggests, consists of two concentric circles of diamonds around the centre stone. Halos are typically combined with side stones, but they can function as a standalone feature when paired with an unadorned plain band.

Side stones

A side stones setting is a form of engagement ring setting in which the ring's shank is lined with tiny diamonds. These side diamonds are kept in place with metal prongs or beads, giving the appearance of a continuous line of little diamonds. The side stones arrangement gives additional brilliance to an engagement ring while emphasising the beauty of the central diamond. Side stone settings are available in various styles, from modern to vintage. A setting like this is a beautiful choice for someone with an elegant, timeless aesthetic.

Three stone

The channel setting features diamonds set inside the parallel banks of the band. Strong and chic, channel-set wedding rings are rated for their seamless shimmer.

Bezel Setting

Three-stone engagement rings, as the name implies, include three diamonds or gemstones placed together as a symbol of the past, present, and future. Three-stone rings are less frequent than solitaire rings. However, they are becoming more popular, particularly among couples looking for an engagement ring that allows them to make a distinctive statement. While many three-stone engagement bands have three diamonds, others use colourful gemstones such as sapphires or rubies. In addition, many couples select gemstones with special meaning for the bride or groom, such as birthstones or gemstones of a specific colour.

Vintage

A vintage engagement ring is one with an antique style, such as one inspired by the Victorian, Edwardian, or Art Deco periods. Milgrain and filigree are two examples of exquisite details found in vintage settings. Antique style engagement rings are appealing due to their non-traditional design, rich detailing, and timeless appearance. An antique engagement ring is a classic piece of jewellery often passed down through generations. A vintage-style ring has a lot of beauty and distinctive elements.

Plain/Classic Band

Arguably the most common and symbolic wedding band: a simple, continual ring of your preferred metal.

2-Tone Ring

A 2-tone ring combines two gold shades and is especially attractive. Popular among newly weds who want sophisticated but more complicated wedding rings.

Fitted Band

If your engagement ring sits extended at the setting, you may want a wedding ring made specially to sit around an engagement accessory. It's called a fitted wedding ring.

Nowadays men’s engagement rings are able to be just as distinctive and fashionable as women’s. While there are no rigid rules for what a man should look for in an engagement ring, here are some things to consider when shopping. The budget is the first thing to think about. What is your budget for an engagement ring? In the end, you will wear an engagement ring for your entire life, so it’s not worth trying to save a little money by sacrificing quality. That said, there’s a beautiful ring at every price point.

Next, think about style. What style of ring do you think your partner and you would both like? Do you like simple more than ornate? And remember to consider your lifestyle. A ring that’s right for someone with a less active lifestyle wouldn’t necessarily fit someone who’s constantly using their hands.

An engagement ring is a special piece of jewellery that marks your commitment to each other. There are many things you need to consider when you are buying engagement rings for men but it is essential that you buy a ring that will fit your style and budget. With so many fantastic options available, you’re sure you find that perfect engagement ring.

Engagement rings for her

Engagement rings for her

There are few pieces of jewellery as important as a woman’s engagement ring. It signifies her love and her wedding vow to her husband and it will be worn every day to keep the special vows they shared in their hearts. When selecting an engagement ring you will need to consider the style of ring as well as the quality of diamonds and metals. It's important as well to get a ring that you can afford.

There are about three kinds of engagement rings that are favoured by women. The traditional style is called solitaire and entails a diamond set in a band of gold or platinum. This classic style is beautiful and straightforward and can be worn with any wedding band. Then there is the red diamond, a cloche sculptural inspired by the famous cloche ring, with a ring of smaller diamonds set around a central diamond. Halo rings tend to look a little more vintage-inspired, and can be a great option for those who want some additional bling.

Cluster rings are also coming into fashion and consist of a bunch of tiny diamonds held close together for a distinctive and attention-grabbing effect. These rings are ideal for women who are looking for something less traditional, and they can be a wonderful way to express yourself. In whichever style you opt, it is important to select a ring that you absolutely adore that will represent your undying love for each other.
